SGC Wins Garden Council Grant to Upgrade Police Station Garden

The Simpsonville Garden Club was awarded a $250 grant from the Greenville Council of Garden Clubs Inc. to continue its upgrade of the Simpsonville Police Headquarters gardens.

The club selected the Simpsonville Police Station for beautification and on-going up keep in 2013.  The planting beds had been neglected and contained large and dying shrubs.   Currently, there are five areas in various stages of repair. We have made considerable progress, but we need to continue to add shrubs, perennials and bulbs as funds allow. We also want to reduce on-going water needs and maintenance costs.

Our objectives are to provide police and city employees with an enjoyable landscape, to  provide visual interest for street traffic while inspiring pride in our community.  By so doing, we fulfill our mission to encourage civil plantings.

Funds come from our general operating account and member donations of plants, both purchased and home grown.  Lowe’s Home Improvement donated materials and labor in the initial phase of the project in 2013.

The Simpsonville Garden Club provides all maintenance for this project except occasional watering and mulch application by city personnel.  Members meet periodically through the growing season to perform maintenance.
